It was oh, so tempting to accept his offer.
But it would mean letting someone else rescue her.
With money that hadnât been obtained honestly, in her view. Plus she wouldnât be setting up a charity. It wouldnât be honest. And honesty was important, especially after what had happened to her. Her integrity wasnât for sale.
At the same time, she was relieved that Josh didnât seem to think any less of her now he finally knew the truth about the huge mistake sheâd made.
And it seemed that he, too, was at a point where his life had to change.
Maybe they could help each other.
Though she had the feeling that he was holding something back. Heâd been very cagey about his previous job. Or maybe heâd worked in financial services and didnât want to tell her, given the way sheâd lost all her own assets.
By mutual unspoken consent they didnât talk any more about their jobs or their past. Sophie enjoyed working with him in the kitchen, getting him to try different flavours and textures.
âIâve got a teaching session in half an hour,â Josh said when heâd finished doing the washing up, âso I really need to go. But Iâll pick you up for dinner at half-past six.â
âWhatâs the dress code?â she asked.
âSmart,â he said.
She was glad that Hannah had persuaded her to pack a little black dress. But there was one teensy problem. âIâm not sure Iâll manage heels in the snow,â she said.
âWear your snow boots outside, and whatever you like inside,â he said. âBring a bag for your boots. Iâll carry it for you.â
âAll right. Half-past six it is,â she said.
He kissed her on the cheek, and it felt as if little fires were dancing underneath her skin. âSee you later.â
âHave a good lesson,â she said.
Kitty came back from the slopes and fell on the goodies Sophie had made. âThese are so good,â she said.
âThanks. I thought Iâd start doing a couple of Christmas-based afternoon tea things each week for our guests,â Sophie said.
âGreat idea.â Kitty smiled at her. âSo what are you up to, this evening?â
âIâm going out for dinner.â
âWith Mr Sexy Ski Instructor?â
âHeâs just a friend,â Sophie reminded her.
âIf you say so,â Kitty said with a grin. âWhat are you wearing?â
âA dress.â
âShow me.â
Sophie did so, and Kitty nodded her approval. âWhat about jewellery?â
âI donât really wear much,â Sophie said. âJust my mumâs rings.â
âYou need jewellery with that dress. Pearls would be good. Come with me,â Kitty said, and ushered Sophie into her room. âPut the dress on.â She rummaged in her jewellery box. âRight. Borrow these.â She handed Sophie a choker of creamy pearls. âAnd I think you should wear your hair up.â
âI donâtââ Sophie began.
âYou do tonight. Iâll do your hair and make-up.â Kitty grinned. âIâve already worked out that you donât wear much, so donât worry; Iâm not going to make you look orange or put huge false eyelashes on you. Just a bit of foundation, mascara and lippy.â
At twenty-five past six, Sophie barely recognised herself in the mirror.
